An article by Mousesavers.com

One of the best and smartest ways to save for a Disney vacation is to open a separate savings accountspecifically for your vacation fund. If at all possible, jump-start the account with a lump sum, such as a tax refund. Have a certain amount auto-debited from your paychecks and deposited directly into that savings account. That way you never see the money, so there is less temptation to spend it. And of course you’ll be earning interest!

By the way, it is very worthwhile to shop around for the best banking deal. Look for FDIC insured online savings or checking accounts. Some of the online accounts are very easy to set up and use, allowing you to transfer funds from your local bank to savings easily.

I’ve personally used ING Direct, EverBank, HSBC Advance, OnBank, Emigrant Direct and Dollar Savings Direct and found them easy to set up and use.

Bank of Internet and Zions Bank are a pain to set up and use (though they sometimes have very attractive rates), so I don’t recommend them unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

Other Ways to Save Money in Small Increments

Here are some additional, relatively painless tricks people use to get themselves to save. It’s all about setting priorities — and in some cases, tricking yourself into saving. What works for one person, won’t work for another. Try one, or try ‘em all. Remember, every penny helps!

Buy US Savings Bonds

You can purchase them online and spend as little as $25 each time. US Savings Bonds must be held for at least 1 year before you can cash them in. There is a 3-month interest penalty if you cash an EE or I Bond within the first five years from its issue date. There is no penalty for cashing EE or I Bonds that are at least five years old. Bonds pay very good interest compared with a regular savings account and since they are issued by the government, they are an extremely safe investment.

Buy Disney Dollars or Disney Gift Cards

Personally I would never use this method because it doesn’t earn interest, but some people find it very helpful because you can’t spend Disney Dollars or Disney Gift Cards anywhere but Disney! You can also give your children Disney Dollars or Disney Gift Cards for birthdays and holidays, and ask relatives to do the same, so the kids will have their own spending money for the next Disney vacation.

Disney Dollars are “cash equivalents.” One Disney Dollar = one US dollar. They can be used at Disney Store locations in the US and at almost all locations in Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line. Disney Dollars can be purchased at any US Disney theme park, or by letter from Walt Disney World Ticketing, PO Box 10140, Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830. You must pay in advance. Shipping is $15.00 for express delivery to domestic addresses only (no international shipping). Include shipping charges with the check and indicate what denominations you want (they come in $1, $5 and $10).

Disney Gift Cards can be used online at DisneyStore.com, Disney Store locations in the US and participating locations at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line (includes most shopping and dining locations). If you want to be able to use the card at Walt Disney World, be careful that you are purchasing a Disney Gift Card, not a Disney Store Gift Card, which can only be spent at Disney Stores (there are NO Disney Stores at Walt Disney World).

Disney Gift Cards are sold at Disney Stores, Disney World and Disneyland. They are also sold online at DisneyStore.com in denominations from $25-$500 and shipping is FREE.

Disney Gift Cards are also sold by many chain supermarkets, warehouse clubs and discount stores such as Target. Watch for special promotions on gift card purchases.

Once you have a Disney Gift Card, if you’d like to reload money onto it by phone, call Disneyland DelivEARS at 1-800-362-4533 and press “1″ to speak with a Merchandise Guest Services representative. Thanks to Linda P for info.

The Change Jar

Make a rule that you never spend coins. Save all your pocket change and throw it in a big jar. Label the jar (i.e. “Our Disney Vacation”) to remind your of your goal. Periodically you can roll the coins and see how much you have. (This is a great job for kids.) Once it’s rolled, put it in your vacation savings account.

If you don’t want to roll the change, see if your bank takes unrolled change. Some banks have change-counting machines and they’ll count your coins for free or for a very small fee. There are CoinStar machines in many grocery stores that will allow you to dump in a ton of change and get a slip redeemable for bills at the cashier, but you’ll pay a hefty premium (somewhere around 9%) for the service; if you do this, at least pluck out the quarters and roll those!

Variations on the change jar: Never spend quarters, or never spend dollar bills. Put those in the jar.

Checkbook Games

When writing a check, round up your checkbook entry to the nearest dollar. For instance, if you write a check for $57.12, record it in your checkbook as $58. Not only does this help you prevent overdrafts, it also means you’re accumulating a little extra in your account every time you write a check. Another good thing about this method is that you’re earning interest on that extra money, assuming you have an interest-bearing checking account.

Round down your deposit entries to the nearest dollar. For instance, if you deposit $300.91, record it as $300. Again, you’re accumulating a little extra “ghost” money in your account.

A variation on the checkbook rounding method: charge yourself a dollar every time you write a check, plus round up. So if the check was for $47.39, round it up to $48 and add a dollar, making the entry in your checkbook $49.

Another variation on the checkbook rounding method: round up to the nearest five dollars. So if the check was for $52.23, round it up to $55. If it was for $9.51, round it up to $10.

Saving Your Savings

MouseSavers.com reader Todd E from Grand Rapids, MI contributed this great idea:

“At most grocery stores after you check out and look at the receipt, it shows you how much you ‘saved today’ by purchasing sale items, using coupons, or the store discount card. We use this as an incentive to purchase these sale items and use coupons, as whatever the amount is that we ‘saved today’ automatically goes into our travel account. Whatever this amount is, we write a check to our travel account and deposit it immediately via ATM… and we have disabled the withdrawal option on this ATM account.

In addition, if we hit our 50% goal, e.g. if the grocery bill was $150 and the amount we ‘saved today’ was at half of that, we give our 2 small kids $5 to put in their Disney piggy bank. You wouldn’t believe how much this cuts down on impulse buys and the requisite mommy and daddy begging that goes on while shopping. So in addition to a having a great way to save, our 6 and 5 year old kids will have about $100 each of their own money that they are allowed to buy whatever they like, with no interference from mom and dad.”

More Tips and Tricks

If a payment ends, keep making it — to yourself! For instance, if you pay off a car or a credit card, keep making that payment, but instead write the check to yourself and deposit it into your vacation savings account.

Make a rule that “found” money goes in the vacation fund. For instance, if you get a rebate, tax refund, gift check or work bonus, deposit it in the vacation account.

Give yourself an allowance for cash expenditures (i.e. groceries, gas, meals out, entertainment, etc.) and make a game of seeing how much of your allowance you can NOT spend. Anything left over at the end of the week (or month) goes into the vacation fund.

Charge everything to a cash-back credit card and pay the card off each month. (Only do this if you can handle the temptation to overspend on plastic, and if you really will pay the balance off every single month. If you won’t pay it off monthly, this is a bad idea.) Use the cash-back bonus toward your vacation.

MouseSavers.com reader Carey G has this related tip: “We treat our Disney Rewards Visa … as a debit card. When we buy something, we write it down in and subtract it from our checkbook register, just as if we’d swiped our bank’s debit card to pay for the purchase rather than a credit card. When the statement arrives, I simply go through each item on the statement and check it off in my checkbook register, just as I would for a cleared check. Then I go to my bank’s online bill pay service and pay the card in full immediately…. An added bonus is that we’re forced to go through every item on the statement each month to compare it to our checkbook register. That means we can see if there’s a place where we might be able to cut back, and if anyone ever used our card without us being aware, we’d find it immediately when the statement arrives.”

Cut out one small daily expense and put the money you’re saving into your vacation fund. The savings can really add up. If you save $1 a day on something you buy at work, and you work 5 days a week x 50 weeks, that’s $250 a year! For example:

If you drink a latte every morning, buy a travel mug and fill it with strong coffee and hot milk at home instead.

If you usually eat lunch out or buy lunch at a deli, try bringing lunch from home at least 2 or 3 days a week. If you just can’t get it together to make a lunch, at least try bringing a can of soda from home instead of buying one at the deli or out of a machine.

Bring a snack from home instead of hitting the vending machines.

Giving up smoking may save you enough money in a year to fund a family vacation. I’m not kidding! If you’re smoking a pack a day, you’re spending at least $800 a year on cigarettes. In places with high tobacco taxes, you’re spending $1600 or more.

Ask your family to help you save. Often children aren’t very aware of how much small expenses can add up over time. If you point out that every nickel they can save the household will get them closer to seeing Mickey, they may surprise you! Solicit their ideas and suggestions, and then agree to put aside what you’ve saved for your vacation fund. Be sure you have a plan for keeping the saved money separate, so that it doesn’t get spent elsewhere. That might mean writing a check for the amount of money saved and depositing it into your vacation account, or putting that amount of cash into the change jar. Whatever it is, do it consistently.

Here are a few ideas your family might consider:

Spend less on entertainment. Borrow videos from your public library instead of the video store: most public libraries offer this service for little or no cost. Instead of going to the movies, check the newspaper for free local family entertainment and events, or have a family game night.

Eat out less. Face it, cooking every night can be tiring and a drag, and that leads to eating out, which is much more expensive. So find a way to avoid this. Think up something you can make in the crockpot one night a week instead of getting takeout. Or turn cooking into a fun project once a week — for instance, make a pizza with the kids instead of ordering one.

Use grocery store coupons. Particularly if you live in an area like Southern California, where the major supermarkets will double the value of manufacturer’s coupons, you can’t afford NOT to clip coupons out of the Sunday paper or print them out online (try coupons.com and smartsource.com for printable coupons). I do this, combined with buying sale items and in-season produce, and frequently save 40% or more on my grocery bill. Seriously, 15 minutes of effort and a $5 coupon organizer can save you an amazing amount of money. Kids who are old enough to use scissors can certainly cut out coupons. Older kids can also sort and file coupons in your coupon organizer.

Sell your junk. Have a big garage sale. Take still-in-fashion clothes to a consignment shop. Sell unwanted books, CDs, movies and collectibles you no longer want on Craigslist, which charges no fee for your ad. You’d be amazed at what your old stuff may bring. Don’t assume no one wants it. (I once sold a ratty bathmat the dog had chewed up, which I was using as a rag, for a quarter. It wasn’t even part of my garage sale — someone just noticed it lying on the ground and offered me money for it!)

If you are a family of recreational shoppers, start going to garage sales, consignment shops and thrift stores instead of the mall. One person’s trash is another’s treasure, remember? There is often good stuff to be had at these places! Take a certain amount of cash and don’t spend more. You’ll get the thrill of the hunt and the thrill of the bargain, but for much less than a trip to the mall.

Shop around on your insurance at least once a year. It’s remarkable how much you can save. Rates for an identical auto insurance policy can vary from one company to another by as much as 100%! An easy way to shop around is to use an online site such as InsureMe.com, which will get you quotes from several insurance companies. I used this site to shop for life insurance and ended up with a great deal from a top-rated company.

Evaluate your spending on cable television and telephone services. Maybe you don’t really need extended cable or call waiting. Check rates to be sure you’re not paying more than you have to for long distance calls. Take a look at your long distance provider’s web site (or call them) and find out if there’s a better deal available for you. I switched to a plan that gives me unlimited long distance on my land line for $20 a month! If you have a cell phone, see if there’s a better plan for you, that fits your usage patterns at a lower cost.

Get everyone to turn out the lights when no one is in the room, and turn off TVs and computer equipment when they’re not in use. Fix dripping faucets and leaking toilets. These measures may only save you a buck or two a month on your utility bills, but it all adds up.

Re-evaluate gift-giving. Do you have a long list of friends and relatives with whom you exchange “duty” gifts that no one really wants? Maybe the time has come to speak up. You might be surprised at how relieved everyone would be to stop the seemingly endless cycle of unwanted gift-giving. Maybe everyone would rather put the money toward a family reunion at Disney! Perhaps you can just start exchanging greeting cards. Or you might prefer to institute a gift exchange (each person draws one name) or switch to “gifts of love” (give each other certificates for back rubs, car washes, and other kind gestures that cost you nothing but your time and effort). Or set a low dollar limit on gifts and see how creative you can get.

Would you like to save money?

If you answered yes to any of these questions this page is for you. When visiting Disney World, knowing where to find quality food at reasonable prices is essential Read this page thoroughly. It contains invaluable information to help you save money.

The average family spend somewhere between $20 to $50 dollars per person per day on meals, drinks, and snacks. That adds up to between $560 and $1400 dollars for a seven day stay for a family of four.

I’m not going to pretend that you can eat for little or no money. Instead, I will concentrate on reality and make practical suggestions that you can really use to help minimize some of the expense without sacrificing quality.

As a frequent visitor to Disney World, I have had to find ways to keep food costs down without sacrificing either the quality or quantity of meals. With a family of four ( five if my mother-in- law is with us) including a growing 14 year old boy who seems to spend most of his waking time thinking about where and when his next meal is coming from, finding affordable food has become something of an obsession with me!!

Money Saving Tips Inside Disney World

If you are a frequent visitor to Disney World, you may be familiar with some of the tips to be found here but certainly not all of them. Even frequent visitors miss things.

If you are a first time visitor you will find a wealth of money saving ideas to help you plan and enjoy your Disney vacation. Every time I visit Disney I pick up little gems of money saving information, some I find for myself and others are passed on to me by fellow Disney World enthusiasts. At one time or another, my family has tried all of these tips. They all work and over several years have saved us a considerable amount of money. I hope that you will find them as useful as I have.

Free Ice Water

Ask for ice water instead of soda when ordering food from counter service restaurants. It’s free. Sodas are expensive and in the Florida heat, water will quench your thirst better than soda and save you money. My family are not big soda drinkers so drinking water is not a problem for us but if plain water is not for you, buy packs of powdered drink to mix with the water and create your own soft drinks.

The average soda in the parks cost around $2 and this adds up fast. If you are a family of four and drink two sodas each a day for seven days, you will spend over $100 dollars. Cost of Ice Water Zero!!

Consider buying a filter water bottle, they remove all funny tastes, and impurities from any water source and are completly portable. While the initial cost is a little high they last six months before the filters need replacing.Fill these handy bottles at drinking fountains or fill them from any faucet/tap and you have an endless supply of great tasting water.Click Here for more details

Soda

If you really have to have a soda, consider sharing. Like the food portions, sodas at Disney are super- sized and many people don’t finish them. Get two straws or bring an extra cup and cut your cost in half.

Portion Sizes

When ordering food at counter service restaurants, consider how much you will eat. Portions at Disney World are large and one meal can often be split by two people. Over a period of seven days splitting meals can add up to substantial savings.

If You Don’t Need A Full Meal Ask For Just The Sandwich

At counter service restaurants, the menus very often list only a price for a meal package, which usually includes french fries (chips to our UK friends) , or chips (crisps) and a drink. This does not mean that you have to buy the whole meal. Sandwiches and other items can be purchased separately but you have to ask, Disney does not volunteer this information. You can save $2 or more by buying just the sandwich instead of the whole meal package!!!

Ordering Kids Meals For Adults ?

Having two children we have purchased many a kids meal, but not just for the kids. My wife and mother-in-law are not big eaters so occasionally I have also bought kids meals for them as well as my children. This can sometimes be a very cost effective way to eat. This only works at counter service restaurants as they have no way of knowing who you are ordering for. Table service restaurants don’t allow this tactic.

Bringing Your Own Food Into The Parks

Bring power bars, chips, and candy that won’t melt to the parks with you. Its amazing how those little snacks you buy throughout the day add up. Disney have a policy of not allowing outside food in the parks, but as long as you don’t try to bring in large coolers, glass bottles, alcohol, etc they seldom enforce it. I have never had a problem.

Buy Bottled water before entering The Parks

Bring your own bottled water with you as it is outrageously expensive in the parks. When the water bottle is empty, it can be refilled at any drinking fountain. If plain water is not to your taste bring powdered drink mix, add it to the water, give it a shake, and make your own soft drinks. If you don’t feel like carrying water bottles around all day, inexpensive bottle straps can be purchased at places like Walmart, K-Mart and at many locations in the parks. You can then sling the strap and bottle over your shoulder and have your hands free.

Annual Pass Discounts

Consider buying a Disney World annual pass. It offers 10% discounts at many Disney restaurants (mainly lunches) and 10 to 20% discounts at select Downtown Disney locations. An annual pass will also give you access to special seasonal discounts on accommodations at Disney hotels. Only one member of your party needs to have a pass to get the discounts for everyone else.

If you are able to vacation at Disney World when pass holder hotel room discounts are being offered, you will save big money and the savings can almost, and sometimes will (depending on length of stay and type of hotel), equal the cost of the pass.

An Annual pass also offers free parking at all Disney theme parks, discounts on behind the scenes tours, dinner shows, mini golf and more. You will also be eligible to buy an annual membership in the Disney Dining Club (see below for details).

Disney Dining Club ( This Is Not The Same As The Disney Dining Plan)

If you are an Annual Pass holder or are a Florida Resident, you will be entitled to buy membership in the Disney dining club. Cost $85 for Florida Residents per year, $65 for annual pass holders (this was previously only available to Florida residents.). The dining club gets you a 20% discount on food and drinks (including alcoholic beverages) at most table service restaurants and lounges plus a very few counter service locations on Disney World property. One card covers a whole family. (As a Florida resident I have used the dining club discounts many times and believe me the savings soon add up to more than the cost of the membership fee.)

Disney Dining Plan

If you book a Vacation package through Disney for three days or longer that includes park tickets, enquire about the dining plan package. For $38.99 per day, per adult and $10.99 per child you will be entitled to one table service meal, one counter service meal , and one snack per day including soft drinks but excluding all alcoholic beverages.

Note the dining plan no longer includes gratuities/tips.If your party numbers six or more an automatic 18% gratuity will be charged.

The dining package has to be purchased for the entire length of your stay. You must be staying at a Disney resort and everyone in your party has to be included ( you can’t buy it for some but not others). Some high end table service restaurants such as the California Grill and Cinderella’s Castle, as well as dinner shows, take up two table service meal credits so you have to keep an eye on where you eat and how many credits you use.

Although, at first sight $38.99 a day may sound expensive, if you intend to eat at table service restaurants during your stay the dining plan will definitely save you money.

Character meals and buffets take one table service credit with the exception of Cinderella’s Royal Feast which requires two.

I have never used the dining plan as it can’t be combined with my Florida Residents discount, but everyone I have spoken to who have used it tell me it is great and saves a ton of money.

Every once in a while Disney will offer the dining plan free of charge to fill rooms at slow times of the year, so it always pays to ask if this is an option during your stay. If you are visiting Disney World at a busy time, I recommend that you make advance reservations for as many of the table service restaurants as you can. Owing to the popularity of the dining plan, many are booked up weeks in advance.

Eat Your Main meal At Lunch Time

If you want to eat at a table service restaurant, consider eating your main meal at lunch time. Switching lunch and dinner can save a lot of money as lunch prices are considerably cheaper than dinner. Portions are a little smaller but are still substantial. If a restaurant is open all day you can often get lunch prices until 4 or 4:30. I have often been able to walk right in to several restaurants without making priority seating reservations, by eating at an off time.

Saving Money At Table Service Restaurants

Have you ever wanted to eat at a nice restaurant but been put off by the high prices? I know I have. But there are ways to cut costs and still enjoy the fine dining experience. Here are a two ideas I have successfully used.

Order appetizers, desserts, and drinks while skipping the entree. This is a great way to try out a restaurant without spending $20 to $30 dollars each on a main course.

One thing I have done on a number of occasions is order appetizers for two and then split an entree with my wife.( With the cost of dinner entrees ranging from $15 to $40 this can be a huge money saver.) Disney have always been happy to oblige and have always provided us with an extra plate at no additional charge. This also works at many non Disney restaurants but you may be charged a few extra dollars for the extra plate.

Rainforest Café Safari Club

Join the Rainforest Café Safari Club. My family and I have been members of the Safari Club for several years (my kids love the Rainforest Café) for a one time fee ( it was $10 when we joined. I believe it has gone up to $15 now). You get a 10% discount on food and merchandise plus members only priority seating. This last option is what makes membership really worth while if you want to dine at the Downtown Disney location at a busy time as waits often exceed 2 hours. On presenting your card at the podium, you get first available seating. In our experience we have usually been seated within 15 to 30 minutes. When you have hungry kids in tow this is a lifesaver.

Cheap Dining Options at downtown Disney

There are two inexpensive dining options at the Marketplace that we use frequent, McDonalds and The Earl Of Sandwich. McDonalds needs no introduction, fast food with no frills at cheap prices.(Though the prices at this location are a little higher than your average MickieDs). The Earl Of Sandwich offers a variety of high quality hot and cold sub sandwiches for around $5.75 and salads around $5.95. They also offer an assortment of bakery and dessert items with prices from $1.45 to $2.50 and two types of breakfast sandwiches for $4.95. Sandwiches are large and in most cases, unless you are really hungry, can easily be split by two people.

Eating At Disney Resort Hotels.

On busy days when lines for food are long, consider leaving the parks for a while and have lunch or dinner at one of Disney’s resort hotels. All of Disney’s hotels have restaurants. Deluxe and moderate hotels have table service and either counter service restaurants or food courts, as well as a pool side snack bar. Value hotels have food courts.

While it may be true that the table service restaurants are expensive, the food at counter service and food courts is generally of a very high quality, portions are large, and prices are moderate. There is a wider variety than in the parks and as an added bonus, the lines are much shorter and you don’t feel like you are eating in the middle of Grand Central Station.(exception to this is the Food and Fun center at the Contemporary which is very loud and feels like a cafeteria). This is particularly true at lunch times when most hotel guests are in the parks and the restaurants are almost empty.

While it is true that at counter service and food courts you have to wait on yourself, you also need to keep in mind that you won’t have to leave a 15 to 20% tip as you will when eating at table service restaurants, both on and off Disney property.

My family’s favorites are Captain Cook’s Snack Company at Disney’s Polynesian Hotel, the Riverside Mill Food Court at the Port Orleans Resort, Beaches and Cream at the Yacht and Beach Club, and the Pepper Market at Disney’s Coronado Springs. (The Pepper Market is an exceptional and unusual food court. This is the only food court that adds a gratuity to your bill (10%), but the many food stations offering great food much of which is cooked to order before your eyes and the unique Caribbean market atmosphere make it more than worth a visit).

Disney Hotel Lounges

Disney resort hotel lounges are not only a relaxing place to enjoy a cocktail or beer but are also a great source for light snacks. They provide tasty and sometimes quite substantial appetizers and snacks. The quality is generally high as the food comes directly from the kitchens of the hotels signature restaurants.

SAVE BIG WITH EBAY

What does ebay have to do with cheap food? Plenty! While the connection may not seem obvious at first glance, if you read this article in its entirety, you will discover exactly how ebay can be the single biggest money saving idea you could ever use. It has saved me a considerable amount on both accommodations and food.

It is a little known fact that if you sign up for ebay (signing up is free) and bid on timeshare rentals you will be able to rent Luxury condos and houses for less than the price of many standard hotel rooms.

Having been a timeshare salesman, I know that many owners buy multiple properties and have to pay an annual maintenance fee of several hundred dollars on each one. They will rent out properties that they are not using through ebay to cover their expenses and make a small profit, which means that you can get bargains. And no, you won’t have to attend a sales presentation (unless you want to) if you rent one.

I recently usedebay to bid on a two bedroom, two bathroom, 1200sq ft luxury condo that slept up to eight people at Fairfields Bonnet Creek Resort (right next door to Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort). It came with a full kitchen, 3 tv’s, a washer, dryer, and my wife’s personal favorite a whirlpool tub in the master bedroom. It cost me $275(low season) for three nights. That’s less than the price of one night at most Disney deluxe hotels. Not only did I save a bundle on accommodations but I saved a small fortune on food as we had access to a fully equipped kitchen and we could cook anything at anytime we wanted.

Even if all you do is cook supermarket pizzas, microwave frozen dinners, pop popcorn, and have toast, coffee, and cereal for breakfast, you will save a small fortune on food. We found having a full size fridge freezer to be particularly useful. With the money you save, you can afford to indulge yourself at some of those expensive restaurants you might otherwise not visit. Plus you have space and privacy that even the most expensive hotel rooms can’t provide. Bidding on ebay has enabled me to stay in places I previously could only dream about.

Prices vary by season with the summer and major holidays being the most expensive times. click here to check for deals on ebay

TIPS FOR BIDDING ON EBAY

I have made it a practice to only bid if the owner has a feedback rating of 99% or higher. These people have a proven track record with ebay and jealously guard their reputations. I have never had any problems when using this rule.

Offers That Require Attendance At Sales Presentations

Avoid any auction that offers free or heavily discounted theme park tickets along with accommodations at ridiculously low prices, they are usually solicitations for timeshare companies and will require you to attend a sales presentation.

However If you are interested in buying timeshares or don’t mind spending a 1/2 day or more listening to sales pitches, they can be a source of some great deals.

Food Outside Disney World

If you choose to eat outside Disney’s gates, you will find all the major chain restaurants well represented. In the Kissimmee, Lake Buena Vista, and Orlando areas, you can find everything from fast food to all you can eat buffets, family style chain restaurants, fine dining, counter service, steak and seafood houses, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and more.

I prefer the Lake Buena Vista area as it is a little less crowded than Kissimmee. But Kissimmee does have more representatives from the major chains such as Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Applebee’s, Sizzler, etc..

On checking in at your hotel, the first thing you should do is check the brochure rack. All the maps and guides to be found there contain money saving restaurant and attraction coupons. Next, talk to the hotel concierge or front desk clerk and find out where the locals eat. (Concierges are a great source of local knowledge). If you have a family, check for restaurants that offer Kids Eat Free Nights. These are great money savers. I like to try and find small independent Mom and Pop diners. They are usually cheaper than the large chain restaurants and service in many cases is better.

My family really likes Panera Bread Bakery Café. This counter service chain has great sandwiches on fresh baked bread as well as tempting bakery items all at reasonable prices. Of the family style table service chain restaurants our favorites are Steak and Shake, and Bob Evans or if you don’t mind basic surroundings, Waffle House serves up good (if a little greasy) diner style food at very reasonable prices. If we want a casual but upmarket restaurant Pebbles and The Angus Steakhouse in Lake Buena Vista are two of our families favorites. Not exactly cheap but great food away from the crowds.

11JUL

A couple of money saving tips just off the top of my head:Parking Parking at Disney is $14 per day. If you go to Downtown Disney and park at the shopping area, then you can catch one of the VERY frequent buses to your theme park of choice for FREE! Thats right, no charge! Especially if you are not park hopping, this will only add about 30 minutes on your day as you wait for the appropriate bus to come. On a 4 or 5 day visit, thats over $60!Shopping As much as shopping at the park for the right souvenir feels good, there are PLENTY of places to buy stuffed Mickeys and tshirts. In the park is the MOST EXPENSIVE of these options usually.Bring snacks! Bring nuts, cheezits, pretzels, fruit and other snacks for the family during the line waiting times and it will make it easier to hold out longer for lunch or dinner. Also, bring an empty water bottle and some Crystal Lite packets instead of buying juice or bottled water at the park. phlebotomy certification . The waterfountains are clean and cold.Dont Park Hop I know this is a tough one for first time visitors to swallow as you want to see as much and as many parks as you can. Engagement Ring . casino dal vivo . But buy a 4 day BASE or 5 day BASE and skip the hopper option. Stay in the park and see everything you can in that park. The time it takes you to leave the park, go to your car, drive to the next park, get in and get oriented is not worth it. Experience the whole park without trying to leave and youll ride alot more rides.Anyone with any comments, theyre certainly welcome.

Have a more enjoyable trip, spending less money, at Walt Disney World by arming yourself with some Disney knowledge.

So, you think you want to go to Walt Disney World. Only you’re scared. Your co-worker just took her family and she said the crowds were horrible, you couldn’t get into any restaurants/all the food was the same, the tickets didn’t let you do what you wanted to do and the accommodations were expensive. Yes, Disney World can be that way, but, no, Disney World does not have to be that way. A little knowledge can go a long way, even in the most crowded times.

The key to having a good time at Walt Disney World is knowledge. Disney consists over four major theme parks, several minor theme parks, golfing (miniature and real), shopping, many resorts, tons of restaurants, spas, and an internal transportation system. You need to know what you want do. You need to know what it takes—money-wise, time-wise, transportation-wise—to do these things.

You must make lots of decisions. The first thing you must do is decide, after you know your budget, is decide when you will visit. Many things can factor into this decision. For example, you need to factor in when you can get away from work. What are the kids’ school schedules? Can you pull the kids out of school? Disney has several different seasons. If you opt to go during peak season (spring break) or holiday season (Christmas) you will be paying considerable more than if you travel during value season. In addition to paying more, the parks and restaurants are more crowded. If at possible, travel during value season.

Next, you need to decide if you will stay onsite or offsite. By staying onsite you will be in “the magic” at all times during your trip. You can have Mickey wake-up calls, use Mickey soap, and possibly look out your window to see Cinderella’s Castle/the monorail/Disney Icons at all times. You can choose from a variety of different themes to experience your Disney magic in. You have access to Disney’s Extra Magic Hours which can give you one to three extra hours in the parks. You don’t need, but may still want, a car. If you do have a car, you’ll have free parking. You can have free transportation to and from the airport if you fly. You may choose to purchase a Disney dining plan.

But you may want to escape all the Disney-ism. You may want to eat at restaurants that don’t cost 3x the normal casual restaurant expense. You may only want a clean place to sleep and shower. You may be driving. You may want free Internet access and free breakfast. You’ve heard that you can stay offsite for much less. This is all true. But, if you do go this route, you may have to pay parking fees at your offsite hotel, parking fees when you go to Disney (currently $12 per day), and you may have to pay a resort fee. Plus, not all hotels offer free breakfast.

What you want to do is make a pros and cons list for each hotel you might want to stay at. Price everything. Know the secret code for discounts. I have gone to Disney at all times of the year, and I have never paid rack rate. You don’t need to either. There are special codes can reduce the rates a Disney resort up to 40%. A Disney specialist TA can keep you up-to-date on the codes or you can visit a number of fan sites out there that list the codes. However, I have opted to stay offsite at times and have had wonderful trips.

You must either then decide on if you want a package or to make a room only reservation. The only way to get the dining plan is if you purchase a package. The dining plans may not be purchased separately. While Disney touts the dining plan as a savings of up to 30%, most people actually save a lot less. If you use the menus and prices as a guide in deciding where to stay, you may find that the dining plan would cost you less than if you were to purchase your meals out of pocket. Some people say they love the convenience, but the dining plan requires you track credits and you must still tip—using two charges. If you simply want to pre-pay, put your dining budget on a gift card and pay for your meals using that. The children’s menu is very limited—only for those 9 and under. Your ten year old will be paying the adult price, and it’s hefty. But, for some, the value is there for the dining plan.

Also, if you choose to purchase a package, you must buy tickets through Disney. The highest priced tickets come through Disney. There are many reputable discount ticket brokers out there. All of them will sell you tickets at a lower cost. Do not buy your tickets through Craig’s List or EBay—these tickets may or may not be what they say they are and there is no way to know until you are at the gate. Besides, tickets that have been used even once are non-transferable. Also, check with your company’s human resources department. Often times, they will sell discount tickets, maybe up to 20% off, or be members of Tickets at Work.

Be sure to buy the right ticket. Disney sells a base ticket and then everything else is optional, at an extra cost. Do you really need to have the park hopper option? If you want to visit more than one park per day, yes. If you are on a budget, you can plan your days easily without it. Do you want the Water Parks Fun and More option? Probably not, if you will only be visiting one or two days; you’re better off just buying a single ticket to that minor park. Don’t forget Disney resorts have nice pools. So do most offsite hotels. Would no expiration benefit you? Only if you take a few short trips over a year apart.

Now that you know what you want, you must decide to book yourself or use a travel agent. A travel agent will handle the details, but really it only takes a short amount of time to do this yourself. There are plenty of websites that can help you with any planning details. If you use a travel agent, they will own your reservation and you cannot make any changes; your travel agent must do it. If a discount comes out, you are at the mercy of their schedule and client list. Some discounts have very limited availability. With a RSS feed, you don’t even need to be checking things constantly; it will come to your inbox. If you do go with a travel agent, make sure you use a Disney Specialist, preferably a Disney only agency.

Now that your reservation is made, you must plan what days to be at which parks and what to do when you are there. Going to the right park on the right day can cut a two hour wait to less than 20 minutes. I highly recommend a copy of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. Also, a good planning website can do wonders for you. This will help you know when and where to make your Advanced Dining Reservations. If you don’t have one, getting seated at a table service restaurant is next to impossible.

These few steps, which is less work than it sounds, can save you a ton of time. It might even save you over a thousand dollars, or more. It will also make your trip very enjoyable. It will seem as if you and your co-worker were on two totally separate vacations.

The process of booking a Disney Cruise vacation can be overwhelming for a first time cruiser. Let’s see if we can simplify the process a bit.

The first thing that needs to be done is to decide where you would like to go and for how long. Disney Cruise Line offers 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 night sailings. The Disney ships offer trips to the Bahamas, Caribbean, Alaska,Europe, the Mexican Riviera and special Panama Canal sailings. The itineraries can be found here.

With the exception of the special itineraries, the Disney ships depart from Port Canaveral which is on Florida’s east coast; about an hour from Orlando.

Three and four night sailings go to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island Castaway Cay. Disney offers a combination vacation, pairing a 3 night stay at Walt Disney World and a 4 night cruise, as well as a 4 night stay at Walt Disney World with a 3 night cruise. These are known as land / sea vacations.

The 7 night sailings alternate between anEastern and Western Caribbean itinerary. These sailings offer different ports of call. The 7 night sailings also make a stop at Castaway Cay.

After deciding where to go and for how long, the next step is to decide when you want to go. Disney Cruise Line sails year round, but there are times of the year that are busier than other. The major holidays, summer vacations and special sailings are all very popular travel times and are usually the more expensive times to travel. Weather patterns also are a factor in deciding when to go. The Caribbean has a hurricane season which runs from June 1st through November 1st each year. As a cruise vacation can be a large expense, it is advisable that each traveler add travel insurance to his / her vacation.

Now that the decisions about where, when, how long and how you plan on getting to the ship have been made, there comes the task of booking the actual cruise.

The first step in this part of the process is deciding which stateroom category will best suit your traveling party. While everyone traveling would like to stay in the most spacious and luxurious stateroom possible, cost and the fact that there are very few of these multi-bedroom staterooms make this implausible for mast travelers.

There are several classifications of staterooms on the Disney ships. They are:

Inside Staterooms – interior rooms on the ship offering no views to the outside.

Outside Staterooms – exterior rooms offering either one large window or two smaller windows

Verandah Staterooms – exterior rooms with a sliding glass door and a personal balcony

Suites – one and two bedroom suites with sliding glass doors and private balconies

Reading the descriptions listed on the webpage referenced above will help you decide which stateroom category will best suit your traveling party.

The final step in the process is getting the best price for your cruise.

Disney Cruise Line bases their pricing on several factors. Your party size, chosen travel dates and stateroom category and location are all factored into pricing. The other variable that often gets overlooked is the percentage of the ship’s available space which is already sold. Disney Cruise Line offers what is known as tier pricing. The lowest pricing for any category stateroom is tier zero pricing. This is the price offered when the sail dates are first released to the public. As the ship’s staterooms fill, the tier will jump to the next level and prices will increase. This is the reason for the adage that says “the earlier you book, the better the pricing.” This is not just a salesman’s line, but actual fact.

There are other ways to get a great price on your cruise. Many travel agencies offer what is known as “group pricing”. This means that the travel agency has held a certain number of staterooms for a certain date at the lowest tier price. In the event that the pricing has started to increase, the travel agency might still have rooms available for its clients at the lowest price. There is also a “group discount” associated with booking group space. This offers a price below the lowest pricing offered to the public. Travel agencies offer other incentives to clients booking as part of their “group”. These will depend on the agency. Group pricing is not available for all sail dates and is usually limited on the dates it is available. Check with your agent to see if it’s available for your chosen sail date.

Disney Cruise Line also occasionally offers special pricing for certain groups. Florida residents, military personnel, travel agents and cast members are often offered discounted pricing on certain sail dates. Disney offers something known as “Magical Rates” to the general public on some of its less full sail dates. Please be aware that the most popular holiday / school vacation sail dates will carry the highest pricing and offer no discounts.

Travel agents will often run promotions offering an incentive to book through them. These often take the form of shipboard credit. This means that the agency will place a credit on your shipboard account. This credit will be good for any additional purchases made onboard the cruise ship. Clients can use these credits for things such as alcohol, onboard photos, shore excursions and spa treatments. Dreams Unlimited Travel offers a special discount to clients that are lifetime sponsors of the DIS. You can see that offer at the link below.

Wholesale clubs often run promotions on cruises offering a discount in the form of a gift card to be used in the store. The wholesale club takes a percentage of the price and gives the client a card to be used for merchandise and services within the store. There is often a drawback in this as the wholesale clubs usually lock you into the price and will not give any credit should the cost of the cruise decrease due to a promotion.

The very best price possible for your next cruise (and we know you’ll want to go back) will be offered while onboard the ship. Disney Cruise Line offers a discount to return cruisers and a shipboard credit. In order to get the best value, we’d advise rebooking onboard to get Disney’s discounts and promotions and then transferring your reservation to your travel agent to take advantage of their offered promotions.

Dreams Unlimited Travel (as do other agencies) monitors each reservation for the opportunity to offer our clients the best price possible.

Now that you have chosen your cruise, gotten the best possible price and are ready to book your reservation, you are probably wonder what happens next.

The first thing that will happen is that you will need to make a deposit. Once a price is offered for a cruise, you will have a short window of opportunity in which to make your decision. Should you decide to go ahead and book your cruise, you will need to make a deposit. The going rate is 20% of the voyage fare per person, with specialty cruises commanding higher deposits (suites are higher and your deposit is immediately non-refundable).

You will also need to make a decision on whether you want to add airfare from your home city to your destination and back, whether you want to add travel insurance and whether you will need transfers from the airport to the port and from the port back to the airport. Each of these things will be an additional expense.

Once these decisions are made comes the truly hard part of the process – waiting for your departure date to arrive.

There are still a few more things to do however. Your final payment will need to be made. Final payments are usually due 90 days prior to departure for suites and 75 days prior to departure for non-suite staterooms.

Cruise lines can have very stiff penalties for canceling a cruise and they are often levied on a sliding scale depending on what point in the reservation process you find yourself. Below, you will find a link to Dreams Unlimited Travel’s webpage containing Disney Cruise Line’s Terms and Conditions, including the cancellation policy.

The last piece in the process is getting your cruise documents. Disney Cruise Line delivers your cruise documents via UPS and they usually arrive 10 – 14 days prior to arrival. Once final payment is made (and you have passed the final payment date of 90 or 75 days), you can visit Disney Cruise Line’s website and complete an online check in process and view and register for onboard activities.

And then the countdown begins……

The following great image shows two converted trucks and another vehicle – the sum of the rolling stock of the Disney’s Film Recording Corp. Walt’s brother Roy is pictured in the center of the image, which appears to have been taken on a Studio back lot. I’m not sure who the fellows on each side of Roy are.

Walt Disney signed a contract with his distributor Pat Powers for the use of Power’s sound recording system, known as Cinephone. In 1927 Powers had hired a former DeForest Phonofilm sound technician and had him create a clone of the DeForest system, which Powers promptly marketed as his own. The sound technician’s name? None other than Bill Garity.

Detail from a 1929 trade magazine ad.

After inking an option deal in the spring of 1929 for the further use of Power’s sound system, Bill Garity traveled to Hollywood to oversee the installation of Cinephone equipment at the Disney’s new sound studio, which was located across the street from Paramount on Melrose Avenue. After the construction of the Animator’s Building No. 1 and the sound stage in 1931, the sound studio was relocated to Disney’s Hyperion Avenue Studio.

Garity was later hired by Walt Disney and became the Studio’s chief sound technician. He also helped design the Studio’s version of a multiplane camera, (for which he holds the patent on), as well as several other pieces of equipment. My friend Hans Perk has written extensively about Garity on his own blog A. Film L.A.

UPDATE – I’m just wondering now if the person on the far right side of the photo might possibly be Bill Garity? Here’s another image the person selling the image posted:
